What did Twitter's daily-user count measure?

The original mDAU figures count qualifying account activity. They cannot tell us how many people use X today.

Twitter reported 41.5 million average U.S. monetizable daily active usage or users (mDAU) for Q2 2022. It separately reported 196.3 million international mDAU and 237.8 million worldwide.

The international point estimate is larger than the U.S. estimate in this historical quarter. Geography follows the account's initial registration IP address or phone number. It may differ from the person's location while using the service, including when a proxy is involved; it is not a verified residence or citizenship measure.

“Monetizable” described eligible activity, not advertising reach

Twitter included logged-in or otherwise authenticated accounts accessing twitter.com, Twitter applications able to show ads, or paid Twitter products including subscriptions. The average is the sum of daily qualifying counts divided by the number of days in the period.

This is not a count of everyone who could see an advertisement or a count of subscribers. It also is not monthly active usage or the unique audience reached across the quarter. Multiplying the daily average by the number of days would count repeated activity, not recover unique quarterly users.

A person or organization could have several counted accounts. An organizational account could be used by several people. Twitter also described removing identified spam accounts from mDAU and the difficulty of estimating invalid activity. We do not subtract a spam estimate to manufacture a count of real people.

Definitions and limits: Twitter Q2 2022 Form 10-Q, Note Regarding Key Metrics and MD&A / Key Metrics. Internal data were not independently verified; the company said its methodology was not standardized across the industry.

Old releases need their correction history

The quarterly filing describes a linked-account counting error introduced in March 2019. Activity in a primary account also counted linked accounts, overstating mDAU from Q1 2019 through Q4 2021. Its historical charts use updated values for Q4 2020 through Q4 2021 and refer readers to the Q1 2022 filing for the detailed recast.

That matters when assembling a trend: a number copied from an earlier release may differ from a later corrected comparator. This guide selects only Q2 2022 counts and does not reconstruct the older chart, calculate growth, or infer that activity rose for a particular reason.

These figures do not establish today's X audience

The selected evidence concerns Twitter in 2022. A later account milestone, monthly audience or differently defined daily count would require its own original source and compatibility review. This page has not verified a post-2022 audience claim or the date reporting of this metric ceased. No present-day total, U.S. adult adoption percentage or forecast is supplied.
