What is measured? Population, question & coverage

Share of internet users aged 15 and older reported as using online social networks at least occasionally during the past six months, within the stated demographic group or geography.

People & population
Internet users aged 15 and older in the civilian noninstitutionalized population; within the stated group or geography
Question wording
“What about using social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram?”
Question context
USEINT directs responses to activities done online at least occasionally during the past six months. SOCIAL gives examples, not separate platform counts. Proxy responses are allowed.
Survey fieldwork
2023-11-12 to 2023-11-18; activity during the previous six months.
Exact selection
Nov 2023 / socialNetworkUser / adultInternetUser; CSV row 769. Metric socialNetworkUser; universe adultInternetUser.

The source code “adultInternetUser” covers ages 15 and older. It must not be interpreted as adults aged 18+.

Age: Internet users in each age group. Ages 15–24 include teenagers and adults; this is not a teen-only survey.

Family income: Annual family income, not personal earnings. All values refer to internet users aged 15+ in the income group.

Education: Educational attainment of internet users aged 15+. High school includes GED; some college includes associate degrees and vocational study short of a bachelor’s degree.

Sex: The source tabulates male and female categories. These are its sex categories, not a gender-identity measure.

Race and Hispanic origin: Hispanic includes any race. Other groups exclude Hispanic people; Other includes multiracial and other less common responses. Preserve the source grouping.

Disability status: CPS-reported disability status among internet users aged 15+. The source screens hearing, vision, cognitive, mobility, self-care and independent-living difficulties.

State / D.C.: Internet users aged 15+ within each state and the District of Columbia. State estimates can be imprecise; inspect standard errors and avoid unsupported rankings.

Methods & uncertainty Read before comparing

NTIA commissions the U.S. Census Bureau Current Population Survey supplement. NTIA publishes weighted aggregate estimates and standard errors. Its November 2023 tabulation uses the random respondent weight for social-network activities; SocialUsage selects already-published cells and does not process individual responses.

  • The denominator is internet users aged 15+, not all people, all adults aged 18+, or platform accounts.
  • The 15–24 group includes teenagers and adults and must not be labelled a teen survey.
  • This measure does not distinguish individual social networks, time spent, daily activity or monthly active users.
  • Survey reports may be supplied by another household member. Nonresponse, imputation and reporting error can affect estimates.
  • Each demographic or state row is a separate published breakdown. The source table does not provide combinations such as age by state; do not invent those intersections.
  • Standard errors measure sampling uncertainty and do not include every possible nonsampling error. Apparent differences do not establish causation or statistical significance.
  • State comparisons can be imprecise. Retain standard errors and avoid interpreting small differences as a definitive ranking.
  • Only November 2023 is published here. Historical comparability and changed questionnaire context require separate review before adding a trend.

Standard errors are supplied by NTIA and converted from proportions to percentage points by multiplying by 100. A standard error is not a 95% margin of error. It does not account for every possible source of survey error.
